Positive expected value asks whether a model price is favorable relative to the available market. An official recommendation asks a stricter question: is the opportunity strong, current, and reliable enough to publish after the rest of the decision process is applied?
Positive EV is a mathematical comparison
At a basic level, expected value compares the model's estimated win probability with the payoff offered by the sportsbook. If the probability estimate is sufficiently higher than the break-even requirement at that price, the modeled expected value is positive.
That calculation is useful because it forces the analysis to include price. It still depends on an estimated probability, however, and the existence of a positive number does not establish that the estimate is reliable enough to act on or publish.

Sports Line Signal separates positive-EV analysis from an official recommendation. The recommendation layer can evaluate edge size, price integrity, input availability and freshness, market sanity, sport-specific restrictions, and calibration controls before a play is published.
That distinction prevents every small model disagreement from being presented as an equally strong betting decision. It also protects against situations in which a mathematically positive result is driven by a stale price, a missing input, or an estimate that is unusually uncertain for the sport and market involved.
The EV calculation asks whether the price is favorable under the model estimate. The recommendation gate asks whether SLS is willing to publish that estimate as an official play.
Small edges are fragile
A modeled edge near zero can disappear through ordinary estimation error or a modest line move. For example, a side modeled at 53% has a small positive expectation at -110 but is negative at -120. A probability estimate only one percentage point lower would also erase much of the apparent value.
Selectivity matters because model outputs are estimates rather than certainties. A process that publishes every positive decimal place can create false precision and produce a recommendation volume driven more by noise than by meaningful disagreement with the market.

How to read the Signal Board labels
Market EV describes the relationship between the SLS model and the listed consensus price. My EV uses the sportsbook line and price saved by the member. Those figures can change as the market changes.
The customer-facing label communicates the broader decision result. An SLS Recommendation is the official published play. Best Lean and Slight Lean can identify positive-EV analysis that did not clear the recommendation standard. Pass means the matchup did not present a qualifying betting opportunity under the current conditions.

- Best Lean: positive-EV analysis that remains below the recommendation standard.
- Slight Lean: a smaller or less reliable modeled advantage.
- Pass: no qualifying opportunity at the current market conditions.
No recommendation is a valid output
A model designed to produce a fixed daily quota will eventually be forced to lower its standard or manufacture distinctions that are not supported by the available evidence. SLS instead allows a sport—or the full cross-sport board—to publish no official recommendation when nothing clears the required gates.
This does not mean every non-recommended game is analytically uninteresting. It means the public recommendation label remains reserved for the narrower set of opportunities that survive the complete decision process at the current price.
