WPG vs. PIT Pick: PIT -1.5

Winnipeg doesn’t get much time to reset tonight. Less than 24 hours after playing in Detroit, the Jets head into Pittsburgh to face a Penguins team that has opened the season with 13 goals in two games. That scheduling spot, combined with the way Pittsburgh has started, has us taking a swing on the puck line: Penguins -1.5 at +141.

Pittsburgh has looked fast, confident and deep through its first two games. The scoring hasn’t been confined to one line, and that matters against a Winnipeg team that could be chasing the pace from the opening period. If the Penguins can make the Jets defend for long stretches early, the back-to-back becomes a bigger problem as the night goes on.

Winnipeg is also handing the net to Clay Stevenson, who comes into this one with very little NHL experience. That doesn’t make him an automatic fade, but Pittsburgh is not an easy place to make that kind of start with the home team already finding the back of the net this often.

The Penguins have their own question in goal with Sergei Murashov getting the start, so this isn’t a spot where we expect Pittsburgh to sit back and try to win 2-1. The better path is for the Penguins to stay aggressive, create pressure and make Winnipeg keep up.

And that’s really what this bet comes down to. Pittsburgh doesn’t just need to win—we need some separation. A one-goal victory isn’t enough. But with the Jets on tired legs, Stevenson in net and the Penguins’ offense already rolling, this is a spot where that margin is within reach.
